How to take care of bedridden patients at home

Unfortunately, there are cases when people get bedridden due to an illness, age, or an accident. Whatever the cause may be, it is always important to provide them with a comfortable and secure environment.  We have some suggestions that can be of help for the caregiver.

  • Promote good hygiene like bathing, dental care, clothing, haircuts, and shaving.  It is also very important to keep a clean and comfortable environment, as mental health and self-esteem are crucial for patients in this condition.

  • Good Nutrition.  Since your loved one can’t exercise normally, good eating habits will be essential to ensure physical health. To help he or she stay physically healthy, you can:

  • Provide plenty of water to combat dehydration and aid in digestion.
  • Encourage a well-balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables.
  • Provide small meals like multiple small snacks throughout the day.

Remind your loved one to take the proper medication. Depending on the patient’s condition, the caregiver can also help in keeping a good control in the medication to avoid either missing taking it or getting an overdose.

  • Prevent Bedsores. Bedsores are preventable if you take a few minutes out of every few hours to reposition them. If they can move on their own, encourage them to readjust themselves as well. Check these common areas for bedsores (the sooner a bedsore is found the better the prognosis): the heels, ankles, hips, and tailbone.  To move a person in the bed, ask the person you care for if you can help reposition them in bed, raise the bed to a height that lets you keep your back straight, lower the head of the bed, remove the pillow from under the person’s head, have them bend their knees and grasp side rails with both hands. Bend your knees and hips – not your waist. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Put one arm under the neck and shoulder, the other arm under the thighs. Replace the pillow and adjust the bed to a comfortable position. You can also use a “Drawsheet”. Using a drawsheet can make repositioning easier when caring for someone who is unable to move himself. A drawsheet is a bed sheet that has been folded in half and laid across the bed on top of the fitted or bottom sheet. The draw sheet is positioned under the heaviest part of the torso of the person you care for so that it can most easily assist you in moving them around in the bed.

Using a drawsheet can be difficult sometimes, depending on the patient’s condition or weight. For this reason, we recommend a better way to move your loved one, which can result in better help for the caregiver. Ceiling lifts and tracks are the safest and smartest systems to transfer people with disabilities or have become classed as bariatric. With a ceiling lift track system, a single care person can support the user. Once the user is positioned into a sling, he can be lifted and transferred to the bathroom, lounge, dining area, bedroom, etc., as the track can be fitted throughout the property to allow you to easily set the bed with clean sheets. There are a variety of ceiling lifts and tracks to choose from, which can be permanent, fixed, or temporary.

The most important thing, above all these recommendations, is that the caregiver is patient and empathetic to the condition of the bedridden person, and seeks help when needed, so that everybody is calm and comfortable.
