How to move in and out of the house when you have physical disabilities

When it comes to living with disabilities, the first thing that comes to mind is how to continue with the life that we used to know before we had this condition. That is why we need to search for resources to adapt ourselves to the new reality.

We always emphasize the need to try to continue with activities that will help maintain physical and mental health and allow spaces to promote social interaction as well. Every decision has to be made in order to facilitate the disabled person to be able to get in and out of the house to gain independence again.

  • The first step to consider is adding ramps to get out of the house. We have already mentioned this need in previous blogs. Ramps can be accommodated at the entrance of your home and no modifications have to be made to the house itself. There are also vertical Platform Lifts in case you have an elevated entrance.

  • Using a wheelchair or scooters to mobilize is the best way to continue with your life as normally as possible. As previously mentioned in our blogs, wheelchairs come in different shapes and can be either manual, transport, or electric or power..

  • Scooters can be useful and comfortable as well. They provide confidence to get out and lead a normal life, as well as being able to socialize with others, which can improve your overall health and wellbeing.  The elderly or those with mobility issues can get anywhere they want to go. They do not have to depend on someone else to drive them to a nearby shop or to visit family or friends. With a mobility scooter, they can do it themselves.

  • Getting out of the house with a wheelchair can be difficult to transport inside or outside a vehicle. For this reason, you will need a Vehicle Lift. Vehicle lifts are designed to safely transport a power wheelchair, scooter, or manual wheelchair in a vehicle. They are designed with varying degrees of automation from manual to partially automated to fully automatic security and lifting.
