What can you do at homes with stairs to help disabled people

Stairs can be one of the most dangerous parts of a house (even if they are carpeted), especially for people with mobility problems, those who need wheelchairs, or elderly people as well.

INSIDE YOUR HOME

Falls on stairways can result in broken bones, spinal cord injury, lacerations, soft tissue damage, traumatic brain injury, and other serious types of harm, and the mental trauma from such an event.

Some staircases have open risers, which is the empty space underneath the steps. This can increase injuries, especially with young children and older adults. With the lack of risers, a person can get their foot caught in between the steps, which could lead to an accident. Another issue with stairs is that steps that are too tall, short, or uneven can be dangerous to use. This can easily cause someone to trip or fall down the stairs.

It is important for the disabled people to continue with their normal life and activities and that’s why we need to provide tools for them.

For all the above-mentioned problems, we can conclude that the best option to avoid accidents on stairs is, besides having good lighting in the area, to install stairlifts inside your house.

Stairlifts

A stairlift is a motorized chair that travels along a rail mounted to the treads of stairs. A stairlift is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to make your home more accessible and safer. They provide a safe and easy way to get up and down the stairs. A stairlift is a safe and affordable way to navigate between the floor levels of your home. It provides convenience and can restore independence for those who stopped using the stairs.

Stairlifts generally last around 10 years, although this may vary depending on the frequency of use, making sure to identify and quickly address any problems to extend their lifetime.

OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

Another big problem is when the house has outside stairs. This can also become a burden to those with are disabled in any form, so an addition is necessary to make life easier and more comfortable. To achieve this, you can add platform lifts or ramps, which don’t diminish the value of your property and can be easily removed at any time.

Platform Lifts and Ramps

A platform lift is a piece of equipment that, much like an elevator, helps people with physical disabilities reach different floors or height levels. A platform lift is most often seen in homes or offices, but a version of a platform lift can be installed in large vehicles as well.  Unlike an elevator, there is no shaft or enclosure in platform lifts, which provides an additional layer of safety by protecting the user from the edge.

The advantages of having platform lifts are that they provide safe mobility. A vertical platform lift is seen as a safer alternative as well as wheelchair ramps. It has a compact design and is easy to use.

Ramps are also useful and can be arranged and set according to your needs and the design of your house. Our blog of last month can be useful for this topic. Click HERE to read more about it.
